It is tempting to see Francis Ford Coppola’s latest work — “Tetro,” a visually lush cinematic fugue about love, ambivalence and two brothers fleeing the dark shadow of their domineering father, a world-famous conductor — through the lens of autobiography. But like much of this movie, the lens appears clouded. Mr. Coppola’s father, Carmine, who died in 1991, was a rather less celebrated musician, best known for some of the scores for his youngest son’s films, including “The Godfather: Part II” and “Apocalypse Now.” Then again, the ravenous, larger-than-life patriarch in “Tetro” could also be a self-portrait of the director.

It's been claimed more than once that vampires are the new zombies, and a quick glance at the Fantasia Film Festival's programming would seem to settle the matter. That said, no genre festival would be complete with at least one picture to bear the flesh-eating banner, and this year the role falls to David Morley's Mutants. Unfortunately, Morley's uninspired entry fails to carry the standard. Shot in a barren Picardy, buried in snow and washed in gray, Mutants left me feeling cold.

Loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart", Tell-Tale sets a dark tone right from the start. Terry (Lucas) is the single parent to his small daughter Angela, who is stricken with a disease that threatens to calcify all her tendons, rendering her unable to function (and no, it’s not called boneitis). Horrible, huh? Adding insult to injury, Terry has life-threatening heart problems.
